During Nomadic we had a series of small residencies where artists would come in and do a one-two shot of workshop and presentation. It was a nice way to get both context and content in one fell swoop. For September’s Back of the Yards programming, we had a couple of these including this pair of events with NYC’s art historian Liena Vayzman. Liena came in for a week and had an unorthodox approach to art. Naturally that unorthodoxy was welcome in the exhibit, so we went to our 0170 science lab studio for a hands-on sauerkraut workshop.
Food gets undervalued as art in the museum world. Maybe because it’s so tied in with the restaurant industry and the commodification of celebrity chefs, or maybe it’s because most museums don’t want food around the other art. Either way, Liena’s workshop attempted to break that mold and served as a mixed media meditation on the fermentation process as an agent of change. Plus, we all got to go home with our own kraut. An aside: I’ve always been a fan of these particular photos from 0170, as they’re so vibrant.
Several days later, Liena came into the museum proper for a presentation on her work as a photographer and historian, and tied it all into the workshop from the days prior. It focused on the changeover from agricultural production to the Industrial Revolution and it’s effect on art in the modern world. Wild stuff, man.
