Today we’re going to take a look at one of the marvelous Portable Studios we had since the start of the exhibit. Brandon Warren Alvendia is an old friend of mine whose work revolves around movable art studios and portable means of production. His “Silver Galleon Press” is one of many mobile bookmaking stations he has developed and carted around from place to place to showcase how artistic agency and creativity on the go can be freeing. A gifted educator, and artist about town, Silver Galleon was a perfect fit for our exhibit.
Seen packed up and ready to go in the gallery, Brandon was able to wheel in the Silver Galleon in one go of it, as all of his supplies, from printers and paper saws, to cutters, clamps, and adhesive, neatly stacked and stored on a single hand truck that could go just about anywhere. On the right you can see him setting up the contents of the press in an almost shrine-like manner, as per his request.
Much like the mobile silk-screening cart we also had on day one, the Silver Galleon Press itself is fun and fascinating, but requires a bit more technical know-how to operate. Fortunately Brandon is well-versed in clearly explaining all of this, which we’ll discuss in our next post on his Bookmaking Workshop. His quick and surprisingly easy introduction to private press bookbinding tied directly into the zine library we built in the SITE Office, and also became one of our flagship lesson plans after the exhibit closed down.
