Today’s mural is a magic trick. If you recall, Dayton Castleman’s massive cardboard fighter jet and goose, provisionally titled “Chicken” was one of the first things we installed, but was on a giant blank wall. In preparation for turning the Convertible Stage into A\V-Aerie, muralist Rob Funderburk was called upon to do a re-creation of the murals he painted in the original space. The 468 sq. ft. painting, “the Robin and the Worm” was more than that. It was a re-imagining of his work at the recently defunct venue that played off the lines and shadows of Dayton’s “Chicken”, and was painted while the 25 ft. long sculpture was in place.
It wasn’t until October that we got the final reveal of Rob’s masterwork. Dayton’s “Chicken”, in the true spirit of Nomadic, moved out for another exhibition elsewhere. “Chicken” was a huge part of the main gallery’s identity. Fortunately, we had Rob’s enormous response to fill the space. “The Robin and the Worm” is a vibrant color-blocked explosion that plays to the strengths of the room. It was designed to exist on its own, as we knew that “Chicken” would be leaving. Rob and Dayton even ended up collaborating again just a little while ago. There’s some great shots of both maestros meeting for the first time that will appear in the archive.
I covered a lot more of these details in entries 006 and 012, but I will add that Rob Funderburk paints like he talks. Colorful and captivating, he’s a joy to work with and just be around and absorb. There’s something about his speech patterns that is infectious. I find myself adopting his mannerisms after chatting with him for a while, and honestly have seen lots of others do the same. We got several opportunities for Rob to hold court at Nomadic after the mural was done. He’s like the Last Beatnik, and I often marvel at his mind.
Rob Funderburk is an artist in Chicago who works in multiple modes, including illustration, painting, and strategic design. Rob has created a 468-square-foot mural for Nomadic Studio as part of a recreation of A\V Aerie, where he was resident artist.
