This particular entry has always been a little tricky, as the images always sell short the amount of cool work we got to do with rum46 in Aarhus, Denmark for Nomadic Studio. The fine folks at rum46 have had an ongoing dialogue with Stockyard Institute for years, as we were both Education-forward Arts organizations. Jim Duignan had a residency in 2008 at their School for Non Productive Learning exhibit. Part of that exhibit was a presentation of the curriculum and audio Beth Wiedner and I made for “Musical Chairs”. And so, when Nomadic came around the following year, we naturally started plotting.

First things first, rum46 sent us these “Seven Biking Vikings” in advance of their visit to Chicago. The photos I have on file don’t do them justice in this format, but they were a septet of poster-sized prototypes of bicycles designed to actively make art. Rendered by hand in red ink on white in matching spray paint red frames, they looked smashing on the peach Rumpus Room walls. Rumpus/rum46, right? Well, while we were building Nomadic, they were busy building these bikes. At the end of our run in the museum, the plan was for us to ship the bikes back to them with the Portable Nomadic Studio for an exhibit and a demonstration of the actual Biking Vikings in Aarhus. Well, we did all that! It was wild, but that’s for another post. And so, as I mentioned, the images today are a little tricky.

rum46’s “Seven Biking Vikings” was great and totemic, and I still have the framed namesake stencil they let me keep to this day. However, it’s only the start of a slightly bigger story. And so, I’m going to sign off with these whimsical images that eventually became real.

rum46 started as a non-profit exhibition space for contemporary art in 1995 – initiated by students from the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Aarhus, Denmark. Today it is run by 3 members with backgrounds from Det Jyske Kunstakademi, Rietveld Art Akademi in Amsterdam, Art History/Århus University. As an artist-curator collective rum46´s curatorial practice is today characterized through the key words socio-political and exchange.
