In addition to the exhibit being held at the DePaul Art Museum, we were constantly connected to their School of Education through Stockyard Institute. Students frequently came through both as tour groups and as workshop participants for their classes. Jim Duignan held his Art Education classes in Nomadic weekly to hammer home the conceit of it as a place of learning and creativity. And with that came some unique opportunities for them to learn and create.
I’ve had the pleasure of introducing Lavie Raven before, earlier on in entry 014. Lavie is the Prime-Minister of Education for the University of Hip-Hop, and an incendiary educator. Stockyard has always been graffiti-positive, and Lavie’s workshop in spray painting was a crash course for a lucky few who got to learn from the maestro. Of course, you can’t spray paint inside a museum, so Lavie took the workshop just outside.
There are myriad techniques in using spray paint, and this workshop was a window into one. While I cannot speak to the exact specifics of Lavie’s lesson, he had students creating quick, overlapping bands of different colors to show how spray paints blend. Like a rapid Rothko of sorts. I’m selling it short, but as I’ve mentioned before, he’s incredible to have around. Lavie was also a featured participant in our Extraneous Education Conference, and was the cover model for Teaching Artists Month at Nomadic, so fortunately we’ll be seeing him again.
